Carlrichard Brühl already presented a supplemented reprint of the Böhmer-Mühlbacher in 1966. He also was one of the most committed founding members of the German Regesta Commission, which was brought into being in 1967. As the first project manager of the Carolingian regesta he considered it his main task to close the gaps (Western Franconia, Italy, Burgundy), which had been left behind by Mühlbacher. The preliminary works under his supervision on the regesta of Charles the Bald were intensified when the Commission was affiliated with the Mainz Academy in 1980.

Back then Herbert Zielinski began working on a volume on Italy, which has since been completed after having been presented the third sub-volumes (1991, 1998, 2006). A first sub-volume on Charles the Bald, edited by Irmgard Fees, has been published 2007. Zielinski, who took over the project management on request of the Commission after Brühl’s death in 1997, prepared the regesta of Burgundy in the meantime. A first volume for the years 855-940 was published 2013. The second fascicle of the regesta of Charles and the last fascicle of the regesta of burgundy will be finished in 2019. With this completion of the series came considerably closer.

Within the Regesta Imperii the papal regesta have a long tradition, too. This project is about the complete collection of the source material for papal history and its processing in terms of regesta for the entire Orbis Christianus. In the sub-project papal regesta 800 (795)-911 (Leo III until Sergius III) the papal regesta of the Carolingian times are being revised and published in four volumes. The first fascicle of the second volume of the years 844-858 with 420 regesta from documentary, historiographical or tradition by letter has been published in 1999. The second fascicle of the years 858-867 followed in 2012 and the third fascicle of the years 867-872 will be completed in the near future. The third volume on the papal regesta of John VIII (872-882) has been published in 2013. The first volume for the time from 800 (795) until 844 and the fourth volume on the years 882-911 are in preparation.
